Known as the 'Valley of Rubies', Mogok is the world's most celebrated source of fine rubies, producing the coveted pigeon blood red stones that command the highest prices at auction. The alluvial deposits in this remote highland valley have also yielded exceptional sapphires, spinels, and moonstones for centuries. Mogok rubies are distinguished by their intense fluorescence and silk inclusions that create a velvety glow unique to this locality.
History
Mining in Mogok dates back at least 800 years, with the region historically controlled by Burmese kings who claimed all stones above a certain size. European traders first reached Mogok in the 19th century, sparking global demand for Burmese rubies that persists to this day.
