The Kagem mine is the world's single largest producing emerald mine, operated by Gemfields and responsible for approximately 25% of global emerald supply. Zambian emeralds from Kagem are prized for their slightly bluish-green color and higher clarity compared to Colombian stones, with iron-rich chemistry giving them a cooler tone. The mine employs modern, responsible mining practices and has become a model for ethical gemstone sourcing in the industry.
History
Emerald deposits in the Kafubu area were first identified in 1928, but large-scale mining did not begin until the 1970s. Gemfields acquired the Kagem mine in 2008 and transformed it into a world-class operation, including the discovery of the 5,655-carat Inkalamu ('Lion') emerald in 2018.
