Jegdalek is one of Afghanistan's most significant gemstone mining areas, producing rubies, emeralds, tourmalines, and the country's famed lapis lazuli from nearby deposits. The rubies from Jegdalek occur in marble host rock similar to Mogok and can exhibit fine red to pinkish-red colors. Afghanistan's gem wealth remains vast but underexploited due to decades of conflict and limited infrastructure.
History
Afghanistan has been a source of precious stones since antiquity, with lapis lazuli from the Badakhshan mines traded along the Silk Road for over 6,000 years. The Jegdalek ruby deposits were documented by Soviet geologists in the 1980s, though local mining predates modern exploration.
