Muzo is synonymous with the finest emeralds ever unearthed, producing stones with the signature deep green color known worldwide as 'Muzo green'. The mines in the western flank of the Eastern Cordillera yield emeralds in calcite veins within black shale, a unique geological setting. Colombian emeralds from Muzo are prized for their warm tone and exceptional transparency, often featuring the three-phase inclusions that serve as a fingerprint of origin.
History
The Muzo mines were worked by the indigenous Muzo people long before Spanish colonization in the 16th century. Spanish conquistadors seized the mines and exported emeralds to Europe and Asia, where they became treasures of royal courts from Persia to India.
