The Merelani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro are the only known source of tanzanite, making this small mining area one of the most geologically unique gem localities on earth. The violet-blue zoisite crystals form in a narrow strip of metamorphic rock just a few kilometers long. Merelani also produces fine tsavorite garnet and other rare collector minerals. With finite reserves, tanzanite from Merelani is considered an increasingly scarce single-generation gemstone.
History
Tanzanite was discovered in 1967 by Maasai herders who noticed vivid blue crystals on the surface after a bushfire. Tiffany & Co. introduced the stone to the market in 1968, naming it tanzanite after its country of origin.
