First discovered in Russia's Ural Mountains in 1853, demantoid is the green variety of andradite garnet, and it carries higher dispersion than any other natural gemstone, diamond included, producing fiery spectral flashes even in subdued light. Russian material, identifiable by fibrous horsetail chrysotile inclusions, remains the most prized, while Namibia and Italy add further supply. It crystallizes in the isometric system and measures 6.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than many garnets but exceptional in brilliance. Moderately priced among the semi-precious gems, demantoid is regarded by many collectors as the most magnificent of all garnets.

About Demantoid
