Also called heliotrope, bloodstone is a dark green chalcedony scattered with vivid red flecks of iron-oxide jasper, a pattern early observers likened to drops of blood on a green field. It belongs to the trigonal quartz group and measures 6.5 to 7.0 on the Mohs scale, durable enough for rings and carved seals. Used since antiquity for signets and talismans, it was linked in ancient Rome and medieval Europe with warriors and healing, and was once believed capable of staunching bleeding. The finest material comes from India, particularly the Kathiawar Peninsula of Gujarat. A moderately priced semi-precious stone, bloodstone is a traditional birthstone for March.
