About Bloodstone (Heliotrope)
Bloodstone, also known as heliotrope, is a dark green chalcedony variety spotted with vivid red jasper flecks caused by iron oxide inclusions, creating a pattern resembling drops of blood on a green field. Used since antiquity for carved seals and talismans, it was associated with warriors and healing in ancient Rome and medieval Europe, where it was believed to stop bleeding. The finest material comes from India, particularly the Kathiawar Peninsula in Gujarat.
