Named for a floating, billowing glow called adularescence, moonstone is a feldspar, chiefly orthoclase or adularia, whose blue-white to silver sheen drifts across the surface as the stone is tilted, an effect of light scattering between alternating layers of orthoclase and albite. The finest blue adularescent material originates in Sri Lanka, including Ratnapura and Mogok, while rainbow moonstone, actually labradorite, comes from India, and peach-orange stones from Tanzania. Crystallizing in the monoclinic system, it measures 6.0 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Worn as a talisman in Roman and Indian traditions for over two thousand years, this moderately priced semi-precious stone is one of three June birthstones.
