A beryllium aluminum oxide, chrysoberyl is prized as much for its family of varieties as for the stone itself, encompassing alexandrite, the color-change form, and cat's-eye chrysoberyl, the finest of all chatoyant gems, alongside transparent yellow-green material. Its hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale makes it the third-hardest natural gem after diamond and corundum, lending it excellent durability. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, and major sources include Brazil, Sri Lanka, and East Africa. That combination of hardness with its phenomenal alexandrite and chatoyant forms gives this fine-tier semi-precious species considerable gemological importance.
