La epidota es un mineral de sorosilicato de calcio, hierro y aluminio que forma cristales prismáticos acanalados distintos en tonos de verde pisatacho a amarillo verdoso, a menudo con un fuerte pleocroísmo que cambia entre verdes y amarillos. Las mejores gemas facetadas provienen de Pakistán y Austria, donde los cristales alcanzan tamaños facetables en verde intenso.
