The most common and widespread garnet species, almandine owes its deep red to reddish-brown color to iron and aluminum within its isometric crystal structure. It grows in metamorphic rocks such as schist and gneiss, with gem-quality material drawn from India, Sri Lanka, Brazil, and the United States. A Mohs hardness of 7.0 to 7.5 gives it good wearability, and its velvety red long made it one of the most popular and affordable red stones, historically substituted for costlier ruby. Moderately priced among the semi-precious gems, almandine belongs to the garnet family and so serves as a January birthstone.
