About Ceylonite
La ceilonita es una variedad de espinela de color verde oscuro a negro opaco, rica en hierro y magnesio, con un brillo submetálico o vítreo. Su nombre deriva de Ceilán (actual Sri Lanka), donde fue descrita por primera vez. A diferencia de las variedades de espinela roja o rosa más conocidas, la ceilonita es opaca o muy poco transparente y raramente se faceta como gema. Sin embargo, su interés mineralógico y su rareza la hacen apreciada entre los coleccionistas de espinelas. Se encuentra en rocas metamórficas máficas y en xenolitos del manto. Sri Lanka, Myanmar y Madagascar son sus principales fuentes.
