La bowenita es una variedad compacta y dura de la serpentina-antigorita, de color verde pálido a verde manzana, con una textura waxy (serosa) y un aspecto traslúcido similar al jade nefrita, con el que frecuentemente se confunde. Es más dura que la mayoría de las serpentinas, alcanzando 5.5 en la escala de Mohs, lo que la hace adecuada para la talla de objetos decorativos y joyas.
