Se forman en cavidades de rocas volcánicas básicas como el basalto, frecuentemente asociadas a zeolitas y prehnita. Los mejores ejemplares, a menudo de gran tamaño y transparencia, provienen de la India (Poona), Brasil y Alemania. Son muy apreciadas como especímenes de colección.
