El ágata es una variedad microcristalina del cuarzo, distinguida por sus llamativos patrones de bandas concéntricas o paralelas en una amplia gama de colores. Se forma por la deposición de sílice en cavidades de rocas volcánicas, creando capas sucesivas de calcedonia de diferentes tonalidades. Es una de las gemas más antiguas conocidas, utilizada desde la prehistoria para amuletos, sellos y objetos decorativos.
