Famed for a vivid iridescence known as labradorescence, labradorite is a calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar whose flashes of blue, gold, green, orange, and red arise from light interference between fine twinning layers inside the stone. It was first found in 1770 on Canada's Labrador Peninsula, the source of its name; major gem material now comes from Madagascar, Finland, and Mexico, and the Finnish variety spectrolite shows especially dramatic full-spectrum color. Crystallizing in the triclinic system, it measures 6.0 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Moderately priced and semi-precious, labradorite is one of the most widely used stones in modern jewelry and lapidary work.

About Labradorite
