A blue-green to turquoise variety of microcline feldspar, amazonite takes its color from trace lead and water held in the crystal lattice rather than from any Amazonian source, as its name misleadingly implies. The finest gem material has come from Colorado, Russia, and more recently Ethiopia and Madagascar. It crystallizes in the triclinic system and registers 6.0 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, a modest hardness better suited to cabochons and carvings than to faceting. Bold opaque color and grid-like white streaks of perthite give the stone its recognizable look, and it remains a widely used semi-precious material in the moderate range.
