A kornerupine é um silicato de magnésio e alumínio raro com um forte pleocroismo que mostra cores diferentes em direções cristalográficas diferentes. Os exemplares verdes ou azuis são os mais valorizados para joalharia, enquanto os castanhos são menos apreciados. O Sri Lanka, Madagáscar e o Quénia são fontes de kornerupine de qualidade gema. Apesar da sua beleza, permanece relativamente desconhecida fora dos círculos de colecionadores. A variedade chatoyante (olho-de-gato) é especialmente apreciada.
