The most valuable variety of chalcedony, chrysoprase owes its apple-green to vivid green color to trace nickel rather than the chromium that tints many green gems. The finest historical material came from Szklary in Poland and was favored by Frederick the Great of Prussia, though Australia, particularly Queensland, is now the leading commercial source. It belongs to the trigonal quartz group and measures 6.5 to 7.0 on the Mohs scale. Smooth, even color free of inclusions or veining marks the top grades, which rank among the most striking semi-precious stones. Moderately priced, chrysoprase is one of the traditional birthstones for May.

About Chrysoprase

A crisoprase é a variedade mais valiosa da calcedónia, de coloração verde-maçã a verde-esmeralda intensa, causada pela presença de níquel coloidal. É a gema predilecta do imperador Frederico II da Prússia e foi muito utilizada na arquitectura decorativa europeia dos séculos XVII e XVIII.
