Distinguished by a glittering metallic shimmer called aventurescence, aventurine is a variety of quartz whose sparkle comes from aligned flakes of fuchsite mica. It appears most famously in green but also in reddish brown, blue, and orange, and it registers roughly 6.5 to 7.0 on the Mohs scale. The finest green material comes from India, where it has been carved into beads and figurines for centuries, while blue aventurine is drawn from Brazil and reddish specimens from Norway. Affordable, durable, and moderately priced, it remains one of the most widely used semi-precious stones for jewelry and decorative carving.
