About Pearl
Pearl is an organic gem produced when a mollusk (primarily oysters and freshwater mussels) secretes concentric layers of aragonite and conchiolin (nacre) around an irritant, forming a lustrous sphere with a characteristic orient (iridescence) and glow. Natural pearls—rare and formed without human intervention—have been harvested from the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean for over 4,000 years, while cultured pearls (nucleated by implantation) have been commercially produced since the early 20th century in Japan, China, French Polynesia, and Australia. Pearl is one of the world's oldest and most universally treasured gems, designated a June birthstone.
