About Morion
Morion is the name for the darkest black-brown to nearly opaque variety of smoky quartz, colored by natural irradiation of aluminum-bearing quartz to near-black intensity. It forms in granite pegmatites and hydrothermal veins across Brazil, Scotland (the traditional Cairngorm source), Colorado (USA), and Russia. The deep opaque black coloration, combined with excellent hardness, makes morion attractive for mourning jewelry, cameos, and collector faceted gems.
