About Melanite
Melanite is a titanium-rich black variety of andradite garnet, forming opaque to subtransparent jet-black crystals with a vitreous to resinous luster in contact metamorphic and alkaline igneous rocks. It occurs in locations including the Roman Province of Italy, Auvergne in France, Saxony in Germany, and Quebec, Canada. Though typically opaque, the intense black color and well-formed dodecahedral crystals make melanite an attractive ornamental and collector stone often set in mourning jewelry.
