About Hydrophane
Hydrophane is a porous variety of opal that is opaque or translucent when dry but becomes temporarily transparent and may display enhanced play-of-color when immersed in water, as its pores fill with liquid—a property its name, derived from the Greek for "water-appearing," directly describes. This porosity means hydrophane opal can absorb liquids, oils, and chemicals that may permanently alter its color or destroy its play-of-color, requiring careful care. Ethiopian Welo opals are commonly hydrophane and are among the most affordable play-of-color opals on the market.
