About Baryte (Barite)
Baryte (barite) is a barium sulfate mineral forming blade-like, tabular, or crested crystal clusters in a wide array of colors including white, blue, yellow, brown, and colorless. It is notably heavy for a non-metallic mineral—its high density earned it the name from the Greek 'barys' meaning heavy—and forms beautiful 'desert roses' in arid environments when sand grains are incorporated during crystal growth. Large, gem-quality blue crystals from Colorado are occasionally faceted as collector pieces.
