Axinite is a borosilicate mineral group known for producing unusually shaped, wedge-edged crystals in shades of clove-brown, violet, and gray-blue, with strongly pleochroic properties that shift through brown, violet, and olive depending on viewing angle. Fine gem-quality material comes from France's Bourg d'Oisans region, Tanzania, and Mexico, where deeply colored transparent crystals reward skilled lapidaries.
