Merelani Hills

Tanzania Región de Arusha Premium Active mining

The Merelani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro are the only known source of tanzanite, making this small mining area one of the most geologically unique gem localities on earth. The violet-blue zoisite crystals form in a narrow strip of metamorphic rock just a few kilometers long. Merelani also produces fine tsavorite garnet and other rare collector minerals. With finite reserves, tanzanite from Merelani is considered an increasingly scarce single-generation gemstone.
