Emerald, the May birthstone, is the most precious member of the beryl mineral family and one of the 'Big Three' colored gemstones alongside ruby and sapphire. Prized for its vivid green color caused by trace chromium and vanadium, emerald has been a symbol of rebirth and renewal for over 4,000 years. Fine emeralds can command prices exceeding those of diamonds.
Traditional Birthstone
Emerald has been the traditional May birthstone since antiquity. Cleopatra's legendary emerald mines near the Red Sea (now known as Cleopatra's Mines) supplied the ancient world. The earliest known birthstone list, attributed to Josephus in the 1st century CE and later codified by St. Jerome, already associated emerald with the month of May.
Modern Birthstone
The modern May birthstone remains emerald. Colombia produces roughly 70 to 90 percent of the world's finest emeralds, with the Muzo and Chivor mines yielding stones of legendary quality. Zambia has emerged as an important source of slightly bluish-green emeralds. Most emeralds are treated with cedar oil or polymer resins to improve clarity, a universally accepted practice in the trade.
Symbolism & Meaning
Emerald symbolizes rebirth, fertility, love, and wisdom. The ancient Romans dedicated emerald to Venus, goddess of love. In many cultures, emerald represents the renewal of spring and the promise of new beginnings. It has been credited with the power to reveal truth, bestow eloquence, and soothe the eyes. The famous Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus is one of the foundational texts of Western alchemy.
Historical Significance
Egyptian emerald mining dates to at least 1500 BCE, and emeralds adorned pharaohs and were buried with mummies as symbols of eternal youth. When Spanish conquistadors reached South America, they discovered the Muisca and Inca peoples mining emeralds of extraordinary quality. The Mogul Mughal Emerald, dated 1695 and weighing 217.80 carats, was inscribed with Islamic prayers and sold at Christie's for $2.2 million in 2001.

Care & Handling
Emeralds require careful handling despite their Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8. Most emeralds contain natural inclusions (called 'jardin,' French for 'garden') that can make them susceptible to chipping. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners on emeralds. Clean gently with lukewarm water, mild soap, and a very soft brush. Re-oiling may be needed periodically if the stone appears dry or if inclusions become more visible.
