June is one of only three months with three birthstones: pearl, alexandrite, and moonstone. Pearl, the only gem formed by a living organism, has been treasured since antiquity. Alexandrite, discovered in 1830, displays a remarkable color change from green to red. Moonstone captivates with its ethereal adularescence, a floating glow of light within the stone.
Traditional Birthstone
Pearl is the traditional June birthstone, valued for thousands of years before cultured pearl farming was developed. Natural pearls form when a mollusk coats an irritant with layers of nacre (aragonite and conchiolin). Alexandria (moonstone) also appeared in early birthstone lists. Before the 20th century, only the very wealthy could afford matched pearl strands, as each pearl had to be individually harvested from wild oysters.
Modern Birthstone
The modern June birthstone list includes pearl (primary), alexandrite, and moonstone. Cultured pearls, pioneered by Kokichi Mikimoto in 1893, made pearls accessible worldwide. Akoya, South Sea, Tahitian, and freshwater cultured pearls offer an extraordinary range of sizes, colors, and lusters. Alexandrite from Brazil and Sri Lanka remains one of the most expensive colored gemstones per carat.
Symbolism & Meaning
Pearls symbolize purity, innocence, and wisdom gained through experience. In Hindu tradition, pearls represent the moon and are associated with calmness. Alexandrite symbolizes balance and joy, reflecting its dual nature. Moonstone represents intuition, feminine energy, and new beginnings. In many Asian cultures, pearls are considered tears of the gods, and brides wear them to ensure marital bliss.
Historical Significance
The oldest known pearl jewelry, a necklace fragment found in the sarcophagus of a Persian princess, dates to 520 BCE. Cleopatra famously dissolved a pearl in wine to demonstrate her wealth to Marc Antony. Alexandrite was first identified in Russia's Ural Mountains in 1830 and named after Tsar Alexander II because its green-to-red color change mirrored the Russian imperial military colors.
June Birthstone Gems
Gift Guide
June birthday recipients enjoy three distinct options. Pearl jewelry suits classic tastes and marks the 3rd and 30th anniversaries. Alexandrite, the 55th anniversary gem, is ideal for collectors who appreciate rarity. Moonstone offers bohemian elegance at accessible prices. Pearl strands, alexandrite rings, and moonstone pendants each make memorable gifts.
Care & Handling
Pearls are soft (Mohs 2.5 to 4.5) and porous; apply cosmetics and perfume before putting on pearls, and wipe them with a damp cloth after wearing. Store pearls flat (not hanging) in a soft pouch. Alexandrite (Mohs 8.5) is highly durable and requires minimal special care. Moonstone (Mohs 6 to 6.5) is prone to cleavage; avoid impacts and use only warm soapy water for cleaning.
