About Libyan Desert Glass
Libyan desert glass is a natural silica glass (SiO₂, ~98% pure) formed approximately 28–29 million years ago in the eastern Sahara Desert by the impact or atmospheric explosion of a large meteorite over what is now the Libya-Egypt border region. The pale yellow-green glass was carved by ancient Egyptians—a piece forms the central scarab in Tutankhamun's pectoral jewel—demonstrating its use as a gem material as early as 3,300 years ago. Modern collectors prize Libyan desert glass for its extraterrestrial origin, historical significance, and attractive pale lime-green color.
