## Why Ruby Reigns Ruby holds a unique position in the gemstone world: it is the most valuable colored gemstone per carat at the highest quality levels. A fine unheated Burmese ruby of 5 carats can exceed $1 million per carat at auction — rivaling or surpassing equivalent-weight fancy colored diamonds. No other colored stone commands these prices with the same consistency. The reason is simple scarcity. Fine ruby requires a precise combination of aluminum oxide (corundum) with just enough chromium to produce vivid red — but not so much that the crystal becomes opaque. The geological conditions that produce this combination are rare, and the deposits that yield the finest material are either depleted or politically restricted. ## The Science of Ruby Ruby is the red variety of corundum (Al₂O₃), the same mineral species as sapphire. The only chemical difference is the coloring agent: chromium ions (Cr³⁺) substituting for aluminum in the crystal lattice absorb green and blue-violet light, transmitting red. The chromium concentration is typically 1–3% by weight in fine rubies. Chromium also causes ruby's characteristic red fluorescence under ultraviolet light. In Burmese rubies, which form in marble (a low-iron environment), this fluorescence is strong and enhances the perceived redness in daylight (which contains UV). Thai rubies, which form in basalt (iron-rich), have suppressed fluorescence because iron quenches it — one reason Thai rubies appear darker and less vibrant than Burmese material. ### Physical Properties - **Hardness**: 9 on Mohs scale (second only to diamond) - **Specific gravity**: 3.97–4.05 - **Refractive index**: 1.762–1.770 - **Crystal system**: Trigonal (hexagonal) - **Cleavage**: None (but has parting planes along twinning) - **Toughness**: Excellent — rubies are among the most durable gemstones ## The Great Ruby Sources ### Burma (Myanmar) — Mogok Valley The Mogok Stone Tract has produced the world's finest rubies for centuries. Mogok rubies form in marble, which gives them two advantages: low iron content (bright fluorescence) and the presence of rutile silk inclusions that scatter light and create a soft, glowing quality. The finest Mogok rubies display "pigeon's blood" color — a vivid, slightly purplish red with strong saturation and medium-dark tone. Mogok production has declined dramatically since the mid-20th century. The area is politically sensitive, and much of the best ground has been worked. New Burmese deposits at Mong Hsu produce abundant material but require heating to dissolve dark cores — these stones are commercially important but do not rival unheated Mogok material. ### Mozambique Discovered in the 2000s, Mozambican rubies from the Montepuez deposit have transformed the global ruby market. Mozambique now produces more ruby by volume than any other country. The best Mozambican stones display excellent color — some approach Burmese quality — and the deposit has yielded stones large enough for auction headlines. However, Mozambican rubies typically have higher iron content than Burmese marble-hosted rubies, which affects fluorescence. The market still places a premium on Burmese origin, though that gap has narrowed for the finest Mozambican material. ### Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and Tanzania Sri Lanka produces rubies that tend toward pinkish-red — the dividing line between ruby and pink sapphire is a perpetual debate. Madagascar's Antetezambato deposit has produced fine rubies since the early 2000s. Tanzania's Winza deposit briefly produced exceptional material before flooding made mining impractical. ## Grading Ruby ### Color Color is the dominant value factor, accounting for 60–70% of a ruby's price: **Hue**: Pure red is most valued. Slight purplish secondary hue is acceptable and even desirable in some markets. Orangy red or pinkish red significantly reduces value. **Saturation**: "Vivid" is the target. Saturation levels described as "strong" or "vivid" by GIA correspond to the most valuable material. Grayish or brownish modifiers reduce saturation and value. **Tone**: Medium to medium-dark is ideal. Too dark and the stone appears blackish; too light and it crosses into pink sapphire territory. ### The Pigeon's Blood Question The trade term "pigeon's blood" has been used for centuries to describe the finest ruby color. Gubelin Gem Lab formalized the designation, applying it to rubies meeting specific color criteria measured under standardized conditions. The designation adds 20–50% to auction prices. Not all labs use the term. GIA does not assign commercial names. SSEF uses "vivid red" and notes when the color corresponds to the pigeon's blood range. The lack of standardization means that "pigeon's blood" from different labs may not indicate identical color ranges. ### Clarity Ruby is a Type II gemstone — inclusions are expected and normal. Complete absence of inclusions in a ruby can actually reduce value by raising questions about synthetic origin. The most common inclusions: - **Silk** (rutile needles): In moderate amounts, silk enhances a ruby by scattering light and softening the color. Dense silk creates asterism (the star effect in star rubies). - **Crystal inclusions**: Calcite, apatite, and other minerals trapped during growth. - **Fingerprint inclusions**: Networks of healed fractures containing fluid. Eye-clean is the market standard for fine ruby — no inclusions visible without magnification. ## Treatments ### Heating Heat treatment is the most common enhancement for ruby. Low-temperature heating (below 1000°C) can improve color by dissolving dark patches and reducing blue overtones. High-temperature heating (above 1500°C) can dissolve silk, improve transparency, and sometimes heal fractures with flux. The market strongly differentiates: - **Unheated**: Premium of 2–5x over heated equivalents of similar appearance - **Standard heated**: The commercial norm. Disclosed on lab reports. - **Flux-healed**: Heated with borax or other flux that fills fractures. Significantly discounted. ### Glass Filling Lead glass filling of heavily fractured rubies dramatically improves their appearance by filling fractures with high-refractive-index glass. The treatment is unstable — the glass can deteriorate with heat, chemicals, or even prolonged light exposure. Glass-filled rubies should be priced as treated material worth a fraction of untreated equivalents. ## Ruby at Auction Recent auction records demonstrate ruby's market position: - The Sunrise Ruby (25.59 ct, Burmese, pigeon's blood): $30.3 million (Sotheby's, 2015) — $1.18 million per carat - The Estrela de Fura (55.22 ct, Mozambican): $34.8 million (Sotheby's, 2023) These prices reflect the convergence of extreme rarity, documented provenance, and the cultural reverence that has surrounded rubies for millennia.
