## Life Creates Beauty
Most gemstones are minerals — inorganic crystals formed by geological processes. But some of the most cherished gems are organic: produced by living organisms through biological processes. Pearls, amber, coral, jet, and ivory have been valued for thousands of years, long before humans understood the geology of crystalline gems.
## Pearls: Layered Nacre
Pearls form when a mollusk secretes nacre (mother of pearl) around an irritant trapped inside its body. The nacre consists of thin layers of aragonite crystals (a form of calcium carbonate) bonded by conchiolin, an organic protein. These layers are 0.3-0.5 micrometers thick — thin enough to diffract light, producing the iridescent luster that defines pearl quality.
### Natural vs Cultured Pearls
**Natural pearls** form spontaneously when a parasite, grain of sand, or other foreign object enters a mollusk. They are extremely rare — fewer than 1 in 10,000 wild oysters produces a gem-quality pearl. Natural pearls command astronomical prices: a strand of matched natural pearls can exceed $1 million.
**Cultured pearls** are initiated by human intervention. A technician inserts a nucleus bead (usually made from freshwater mussel shell) and a piece of donor mantle tissue into the mollusk. The mantle tissue grows around the bead and secretes nacre, producing a pearl in 1-3 years.

Nacre thickness is critical for pearl durability and luster. Akoya pearls with thin nacre (under 0.35mm) may show the nucleus through the nacre and will deteriorate over years of wear.
## Amber: Fossilized Resin
Amber is fossilized tree resin, typically 20-300 million years old. When resin exuded by ancient trees is buried in sediment, it undergoes polymerization — the resin molecules cross-link into a stable, hard material through heat and pressure over millions of years.
### The Science of Amber Inclusions
Amber's scientific value often exceeds its gem value. Insects, spiders, feathers, plant material, and even small lizards trapped in flowing resin 40-100 million years ago are preserved in extraordinary detail. These inclusions provide paleontologists with three-dimensional specimens of ancient organisms that cannot be preserved in stone fossils.

Burmese amber (Kachin amber) is the oldest amber commonly available and contains Cretaceous insects contemporary with dinosaurs.
### Amber vs Copal
Copal is partially fossilized resin, typically less than 2 million years old. It has not fully polymerized and is softer, more soluble, and less stable than true amber. Copal is sometimes sold as amber — it is cheaper and can contain modern insects artificially embedded.
Test: a drop of acetone softens copal but does not affect true amber.
## Coral: Calcium Carbonate From the Sea
Precious coral used in jewelry comes primarily from Corallium species — deep-water corals that grow in branching formations at depths of 20-1,000 meters. Unlike reef-building corals, precious coral is not photosynthetic and does not require sunlight.

Coral has a Mohs hardness of only 3-4, making it too soft for rings. It is used primarily in beads, carvings, cabochons, and decorative objects. Fine Mediterranean red coral in large pieces can command $50-$500 per gram.
### Ethical Considerations
Coral harvesting raises significant environmental concerns. Many coral species are protected under CITES. Mediterranean red coral populations have declined significantly due to overharvesting. Buyers should verify that coral jewelry is sourced legally and sustainably.
## Jet: Fossilized Wood
Jet is a type of lignite coal formed from waterlogged driftwood that was buried in marine sediment under high pressure. The most famous source is Whitby, England, where jet has been carved since the Bronze Age.
Jet became enormously popular during the Victorian era as mourning jewelry after Queen Victoria wore it following Prince Albert's death. Today, jet is primarily of interest to collectors and historical jewelry enthusiasts.
