## Why One Method Does Not Fit All A cleaning technique safe for diamond can damage opal, emerald, or pearl. The variation in hardness, porosity, treatment status, and chemical composition across gem types means that cleaning must be tailored to the specific stone. The safest default for any stone you are unsure about: mild soap, warm (not hot) water, a soft brush, and air drying. This handles most cases without risk. ## Ultrasonic Cleaners Ultrasonic cleaners use high-frequency sound waves to create microscopic bubbles that dislodge dirt. They are effective for hard, untreated stones in secure settings but can cause serious damage in many situations. **Safe for ultrasonic cleaning**: Diamond (unless heavily included or clarity-enhanced), ruby and sapphire (if untreated or heat-treated only, not fracture-filled), spinel, alexandrite. **Unsafe for ultrasonic cleaning**: - Emerald: vibration dislodges oil/resin treatment from fractures. - Opal: vibration can cause opal to craze (crack) and can dislodge thin doublets. - Tanzanite: relatively brittle, and vibration risks chipping or cracking along crystal planes. - Pearl: destroys nacre surface over time. - Turquoise: porous, and ultrasonic liquid can penetrate and damage. - Any stone with known fractures or inclusions reaching the surface. - Any stone suspected of fracture filling (glass-filled ruby, oiled emerald). - Organic gems: amber, jet, coral. When in doubt, skip the ultrasonic. ## Steam Cleaning Steam cleaning uses pressurized steam to blast away dirt and is effective for hard, stable stones. It is faster than ultrasonic but carries additional risks from thermal shock and pressure. **Safe**: Diamond, sapphire, ruby (untreated), spinel, alexandrite — all in secure settings. **Unsafe**: All organic gems (pearl, coral, amber), opal (thermal shock can cause crazing), emerald (steam removes oiling treatment), tanzanite (thermal shock risk), any included stone, any stone with fractures. ## Safe Hand Cleaning by Stone Type ### Diamond The most maintenance-free of all gemstones. Diamonds attract grease and oil from skin and cosmetics, which reduces brilliance. A brief soak in warm water with a drop of dish soap, scrubbed gently with a soft toothbrush, rinses clean easily. Rinse thoroughly and air dry or pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Repeat weekly for pieces worn daily. ### Ruby and Sapphire (Corundum) Heat-treated rubies and sapphires: warm soapy water and a soft brush is ideal. Avoid ultrasonic for fracture-filled or glass-filled material. For "no heat" certified stones from an investment perspective, hand cleaning only is the safest approach — avoid anything that might alter the stone's condition for future lab certification. ### Emerald Emeralds are almost always oiled or resin-treated. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners remove treatment. Use only warm water with a drop of soap, a very soft brush, quick rinse, and immediate pat dry. Never soak emerald for extended periods. Avoid ultrasonic, steam, and any solvents (acetone, alcohol). When an emerald's fractures become visible after cleaning removes treatment, the stone can be re-oiled by a lapidary or jeweler. ### Pearl The softest and most vulnerable of all common gemstones in jewelry (Mohs 2.5–4.5). Clean with a damp soft cloth only — no soap, no soaking, no ultrasonic, no steam. After wearing, wipe pearls with a clean soft cloth before storing to remove perspiration and oils. Allow pearl strands to lie flat to dry before storing — water can weaken the silk thread. Restring pearl necklaces every 1–2 years if worn regularly. ### Opal A damp soft cloth with mild soap if needed, rinsed quickly and dried immediately. Never soak opal — it can absorb water and become temporarily cloudy, or in the long term, lose moisture and craze. No ultrasonic, no steam. Store away from direct heat and sunlight. ### Turquoise Damp soft cloth only. Turquoise is porous and absorbs water, oils, and cleaning solutions that permanently alter its color. Avoid soaking, ultrasonic, chemical cleaners, and steam. Many turquoise pieces are treated with wax or resin stabilization — harsh cleaning removes this treatment. ### Organic Gems (Amber, Jet, Coral) Damp soft cloth with mild soap, quick rinse, pat dry. No chemicals, no ultrasonic, no steam. Amber is dissolved by alcohol and solvents; avoid nail polish remover and similar substances near amber jewelry. ## After Cleaning Patting dry with a lint-free cloth rather than air drying prevents water spots on hard stones. For pearl, let air dry on a flat surface before returning to a closed box. Store clean jewelry in individual compartments or soft pouches to prevent contact between pieces.
