In modern gemology, the term has been formalized by certain laboratories: **Gubelin**: Defines pigeon's blood as a specific range of red with strong saturation and medium to medium-dark tone, measured under standardized lighting. Local miners continued to extract rubies through small-scale operations, and stones moved through border trading networks to Thailand, where Bangkok became the world center for ruby trading and treatment. The Mong Hsu deposit, discovered in the 1990s south of Mogok, dramatically increased Burmese ruby production — but Mong Hsu rubies typically contain dark cores that require heat treatment, making them commercially important but gemologically distinct from classic unheated Mogok material. ## Sanctions and Trade The United States imposed sanctions on Burmese gemstones through the Tom Lantos JADE Act of 2008, effectively banning the import of Burmese ruby and jadeite into the U.S. These sanctions were lifted in 2016 following political reforms, then the situation became complicated again after the 2021 military coup.
