The pink to violet-pink variety of beryl, morganite is colored by trace manganese and shows a vitreous luster with typically excellent clarity. It was first described in 1910 from Madagascar and named in honor of the financier and gem collector J.P. Morgan by George Frederick Kunz of Tiffany & Co. Crystallizing in the hexagonal system, it measures 7.5 to 8.0 on the Mohs scale, a hardness well suited to everyday jewelry. Moderately priced among the semi-precious gems, morganite is sourced from Brazil's Minas Gerais, Afghanistan, Mozambique, and Madagascar, where pastel pink to peach-pink crystals of remarkable size and clarity occur.
