Pink to violet and strongly pleochroic, kunzite is the manganese-colored variety of spodumene, a lithium aluminum silicate that shows pale pink, deeper pink-violet, and colorless faces when turned in the light. It was first described in 1902 from Pala, California, and named for the gemologist George Frederick Kunz of Tiffany & Co.; the finest crystals come from Afghanistan, Brazil's Minas Gerais, Madagascar, and Pakistan. Crystallizing in the monoclinic system, it measures 6.0 to 7.0 on the Mohs scale. Favored as a moderately priced semi-precious stone for its delicate pink and lavender tones, kunzite can nonetheless fade under prolonged ultraviolet exposure.
