About Monazite
Monazite is a cerium lanthanum phosphate mineral typically forming yellow-brown, reddish-brown, or pale yellow tabular to prismatic monoclinic crystals with a resinous to waxy luster, and is an important ore of rare earth elements and thorium. It forms in granitic and pegmatitic rocks and as a heavy mineral placer deposit in sands, with large deposits in India, Brazil, Australia, and South Africa. Rare transparent yellow-brown crystals are occasionally faceted for collectors, though the mineral's mildly radioactive thorium content limits its gemological use.
