About Steatite
Steatite, or soapstone, is a massive talc-rich rock with a distinctive soapy feel and waxy luster, ranging from white and gray to green and brown, that has been carved into tools, vessels, figurines, and ornaments by cultures worldwide for over 10,000 years. Its workability, heat resistance, and attractive appearance made it a preferred medium for ancient Egyptian scarabs, Aztec carvings, and traditional Inuit sculpture. India, Brazil, and the United States are major sources of carving-quality steatite.
