About Wood Opal
Wood Opal is a form of petrified wood in which the original organic material has been replaced by opal (hydrated silica), preserving the cellular structure of the original wood in stunning detail while producing a gemstone that can display both the texture of wood grain and, in the finest specimens, a play of color. Opalescent petrified wood is found in Nevada, Idaho, and Oregon, USA, as well as in Australia and Indonesia, and is fashioned into unique cabochons and decorative pieces.
