La fosgenita es un carbonato-cloruro de plomo que forma cristales prismáticos cuadrados de color blanco, amarillo pálido o verdoso con un lustre adamantino y alta densidad. Se forma como mineral secundario en las zonas de oxidación de los depósitos de plomo, siendo sus yacimientos más célebres la mina Monteponi en Cerdeña (Italia) y la mina Laurion en Grecia, donde ya los antiguos griegos la conocían. Sus hermosos cristales diamantíferos son muy codiciados por los coleccionistas de minerales de plomo, aunque su blandura y fragilidad limitan su uso en joyería.
