La crisotilo es la variedad fibrosa del mineral serpentina, compuesta por filosilicatos de magnesio, y constituye el tipo más común y económicamente más importante de asbesto (amianto). Sus fibras largas, blancas y sedosas le dieron históricamente gran valor industrial como material ignífugo y aislante. Sin embargo, su uso ha sido severamente restringido o prohibido en muchos países por sus graves efectos sobre la salud pulmonar cuando se inhalan sus fibras.
