## Why Lab Reports Matter
A gemstone laboratory report is the closest thing the colored stone world has to an objective assessment of a gem's identity and condition. Unlike diamond grading (where GIA's system is nearly universal), colored stone reports vary significantly between laboratories in format, terminology, and scope. Understanding these differences is essential for any serious buyer or collector.
A report does not assign a monetary value — that is the role of an appraiser. What a report does is confirm species identification, disclose treatments, and (optionally) provide a geographic origin opinion. These three pieces of information can collectively account for a tenfold difference in a stone's market value.
## GIA (Gemological Institute of America)
### Report Types
**GIA Colored Stone Identification Report**: The standard report confirming species, variety, weight, measurements, shape, cut, and treatment status. Available for most colored stones.
**GIA Colored Stone Origin Report**: Adds a geographic origin opinion to the identification report. Available for ruby, sapphire, emerald, Paraiba tourmaline, alexandrite, and red spinel.
### What GIA Reports Include
- **Species and variety**: e.g., "Natural Corundum, Variety: Ruby"
- **Weight and measurements**: Carat weight to two decimal places, dimensions in millimeters

- "Indications of clarity enhancement" — filled with oil, resin, or glass
- "Faint," "Minor," "Moderate," "Significant," "Prominent" — degree of enhancement in emeralds
GIA does not assign commercial trade names like "pigeon's blood" or "Royal Blue" — a deliberate policy decision to maintain objectivity.
## Gubelin Gem Lab
### History and Reputation
Founded in 1923 in Lucerne, Switzerland, Gubelin is perhaps the most prestigious laboratory for colored stone certification. Their research collection of reference stones from documented deposits is among the world's most comprehensive. A Gubelin report on a fine ruby or sapphire carries exceptional weight at auction.
### What Gubelin Reports Include
Gubelin reports are notably detailed:
- **Gemstone identification**: Species, variety, and color
- **Treatment status**: With detailed descriptions of any detected treatments
- **Origin**: Gubelin provides origin opinions with a confidence level
- **Appendix letters**: For exceptional stones, Gubelin issues appendix letters that may include commercial quality designations
### Gubelin's Commercial Designations
Unlike GIA, Gubelin assigns market-relevant quality designations for exceptional stones:
- **"Pigeon's Blood"**: For rubies meeting specific color criteria — a designation that can add 20–50% to a stone's auction value
- **"Royal Blue"**: For sapphires meeting Gubelin's blue color standard
- **"Vivid Green"**: For emeralds of exceptional saturation
These designations are not given lightly. A ruby must meet strict color parameters under standardized viewing conditions to receive "pigeon's blood" status. The designation has become so commercially valuable that some dealers specifically submit stones to Gubelin hoping for the appendix letter.
## SSEF (Swiss Gemmological Institute)
### Approach
Based in Basel, Switzerland, SSEF is known for scientific rigor and conservative opinions. They are particularly respected for sapphire and ruby origin work and have pioneered several detection methods for new treatment types.
### Report Characteristics
- **Detailed analytical data**: SSEF reports often include more technical detail than other labs, including specific spectroscopic data
- **Conservative origin calls**: When evidence is ambiguous, SSEF is more likely to decline an origin opinion than to speculate
- **Treatment detail**: Thorough descriptions of treatment evidence, useful for understanding exactly what has been done to a stone
- **Quality descriptions**: Like Gubelin, SSEF offers commercial quality designations for exceptional material
SSEF has developed proprietary testing methods including age dating of inclusions (to verify that inclusions are consistent with claimed origins) and advanced spectroscopic techniques.
## AGL (American Gemological Laboratories)
### Focus
Based in New York, AGL is the leading American laboratory for colored stone certification (GIA is American too, but AGL specializes more narrowly in colored stones). AGL is particularly valued for its detailed treatment descriptions.
### The AGL Prestige Report
AGL's premium report includes:
- **Color grade**: AGL assigns a specific color grade on their proprietary scale
- **Treatment grade**: Classified as None, Minor, Moderate, or Significant — with detailed explanations of what was detected
- **Clarity enhancement**: For emeralds, AGL rates enhancement on a None/Minor/Moderate/Significant scale and identifies the filler type (oil, resin, or polymer)
- **Origin**: With confidence assessment
### AGL's Treatment Classification
AGL provides some of the most detailed treatment descriptions in the industry. For heated corundum, they distinguish between:
- Standard heating (relatively low temperature)
- High-temperature heating
- Heating with flux (which can heal fractures)
- Heating with beryllium diffusion
This granularity matters because different heating methods affect value differently. Standard low-temperature heating is more accepted by the market than high-temperature flux healing.
## Comparing Reports Across Labs
### When Labs Disagree
Disagreement between laboratories is not uncommon, especially for origin determination. A stone might receive:
- "Burma" from Gubelin
- "No origin determination possible" from SSEF
- "Burma (Myanmar)" from GIA
This does not mean any lab is wrong — it reflects different databases, different analytical approaches, and different confidence thresholds. When labs disagree, the market typically follows the most favorable opinion from the most respected lab for that stone type.
### Which Lab for Which Stone?
Industry conventions have developed:
- **Ruby**: Gubelin and SSEF are most respected. A Gubelin "pigeon's blood" appendix maximizes auction value.
- **Kashmir sapphire**: Gubelin and SSEF. A concordant opinion from both labs is the gold standard.
- **Colombian emerald**: GIA and Gubelin. AGL for the U.S. market.
- **Paraiba tourmaline**: GIA's Paraiba determination is widely accepted. Gubelin also provides these.
- **Diamond (natural vs. lab-grown)**: GIA is the industry standard.
### Cost Comparison
Lab report costs vary by stone type, size, and services requested. Approximate ranges:
- GIA identification: $100–$200
- GIA origin: $150–$300 additional
- Gubelin full report with origin: $300–$800
- SSEF report: $300–$600
- AGL Prestige: $200–$500
For stones worth $50,000 or more, obtaining reports from two labs is standard practice. The cost is trivial relative to the stone's value, and concordant opinions strengthen the stone's documentation.
