Decoding lab reports from GIA, AGL, Gübelin, and SSEF

## Why Lab Certificates Matter
A gemstone certificate — formally called a grading report or lab report — is an independent assessment of a stone's identity, quality characteristics, and any treatments it has undergone. For significant purchases, a certificate from a reputable laboratory is essential. It is your primary protection against misrepresentation and provides objective data that supports resale value.
The key word is "reputable." Dozens of laboratories issue gem certificates worldwide, and their quality varies enormously. A certificate from an obscure lab may be meaningless, or worse, actively misleading. Understanding which labs to trust and what their reports actually say protects you as a buyer.
## The Major Laboratories
**GIA (Gemological Institute of America)** — The most recognized name globally, particularly for diamonds. GIA's colored stone reports are thorough and widely respected. Their diamond grading is the global standard. GIA is based in Carlsbad, California, with offices worldwide.
**AGL (American Gemological Laboratories)** — Highly respected for colored stones, particularly for origin determinations. Their Comprehensive Quality Analysis report is one of the most detailed available for colored stones.
**Gübelin Gem Lab** — Switzerland-based, one of the oldest and most prestigious colored stone laboratories. Gübelin reports carry significant weight in auction contexts and high-value transactions. Their origin determinations are considered authoritative.
**SSEF (Swiss Gemmological Institute)** — Another Swiss laboratory with strong reputation for colored stones and pearls. SSEF and Gübelin reports are particularly important for Kashmir sapphires, Burmese rubies, and Colombian emeralds at auction.
**Lotus Gemology** — Bangkok-based, increasingly respected for colored stones, particularly rubies and sapphires from Southeast Asian sources.
**Other labs**: IGI (International Gemological Institute) and EGL (European Gemological Laboratory) are widely encountered but considered less rigorous than the above for diamonds. For significant purchases, stick with GIA, AGL, Gübelin, or SSEF.
## Reading a Diamond Certificate
A GIA Diamond Grading Report includes:
**Shape and cutting style** — e.g., "Round Brilliant" or "Oval Modified Brilliant."
**Measurements** — millimeter dimensions (diameter range for rounds, length x width x depth for fancy shapes).
**Carat Weight** — to the nearest 0.01 carat for most stones.
**Color Grade** — D through Z. D, E, F are colorless; G, H, I, J near-colorless. K–M faint yellow. Grades below Z are "fancy colored" and graded differently.
**Clarity Grade** — FL (Flawless), IF (Internally Flawless), VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1, I2, I3. Evaluated under 10x magnification.
**Cut Grade** — Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, or Poor. This overall grade considers polish, symmetry, and proportions.
**Polish** — How smooth the facet surfaces are.
**Symmetry** — How precisely the facets align and mirror each other.
**Fluorescence** — Whether the diamond fluoresces under UV light, and how strongly. "None," "Faint," "Medium," "Strong," or "Very Strong." Strong blue fluorescence can make some diamonds appear hazy in sunlight — a relevant factor in valuation.
The report also includes a diagram showing the location of inclusions (called a "plot" or "clarity diagram").
## Reading a Colored Stone Certificate
Colored stone reports include some of the same elements but differ importantly:
**Species and variety** — Identifies the gem: "Natural Corundum — Ruby" or "Natural Beryl — Emerald."
**Color description** — Using GIA's standardized hue/tone/saturation terminology, or descriptive terms ("vivid red" for rubies, "medium-dark blue" for sapphires).
**Clarity/transparency** — Often described as "eye clean" or noted with specific inclusions rather than a formal grade system like diamonds.
**Country of origin** (on premium reports) — States the geographic origin of the stone: Burma (Myanmar), Kashmir, Colombia, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), etc. This is a probability assessment, not a guarantee. Origin significantly affects value for fine stones.
**Treatment disclosure** — This is critical. The certificate must state whether the stone has been treated and by what method. Common disclosures:
- "No indications of heating" — the stone shows no evidence of heat treatment. For rubies and sapphires, this carries a significant premium.
- "Indications of heating" — heat treatment was likely or definitely applied.
- "Minor clarity enhancement" — small amounts of oil or resin in emerald fractures.
- "Fracture filling" or "glass filling" — more extensive filling, common in low-quality rubies.
- "Beryllium diffusion" — a controversial treatment in sapphires that changes color by diffusing beryllium into the stone.
**The most important line on any colored stone certificate** is the treatment disclosure. An untreated Burmese ruby of fine quality can be worth 2–5 times an equivalent treated stone.
## Verification and Limitations
All major labs offer online verification. GIA's report verification is available at gia.edu/report-check. Gübelin and SSEF offer similar services. Always verify a certificate against the stone using the report number and physical description before completing a significant purchase.
Certificates have limitations. They reflect the stone's condition at the time of grading. Subsequent treatment (re-oiling an emerald, for example) may not be reflected. Certificates also do not guarantee value — they describe characteristics, and the market assigns prices.
For stones above $1,000–$2,000 in value, requiring a certificate from a recognized laboratory is reasonable. For fine colored stones above $5,000, Gübelin or SSEF reports (for origin-significant stones) or AGL Comprehensive reports provide the most complete information.
