## Gems Move: They Always Have
Gemstones are among the oldest traded commodities in human history. Their combination of extreme value, small size, and durability makes them ideal trade goods — a handful of rubies can represent more wealth than a caravan of spices, and they do not spoil, rust, or decay. This portability has driven gemstone trade across continents for at least 5,000 years.
Tracing these trade routes reveals not just the movement of stones but the movement of culture, knowledge, and power. The same routes that carried rubies and sapphires also carried religions, languages, technologies, and diseases. Gemstones were often the highest-value cargo on trade networks that shaped civilizations.
## Ancient Routes
### The Lapis Lazuli Road (3000 BCE+)
The oldest documented gemstone trade route connected the lapis lazuli mines of Badakhshan (northern Afghanistan) to the civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indus Valley. Lapis lazuli — the deep blue stone that Egyptians valued above gold — traveled thousands of kilometers by donkey caravan through mountain passes and river valleys.
This route predates the Silk Road by millennia. The presence of Afghan lapis lazuli in Egyptian tombs of the Third Dynasty (c. 2600 BCE) and in Sumerian jewelry of the same period demonstrates that long-distance gemstone trade was established when the pyramids were being built.
### The Incense and Spice Routes
Pearls from the Persian Gulf and Red Sea, along with emeralds from Egyptian mines, traveled the maritime and overland incense routes connecting Arabia, East Africa, Egypt, and the Mediterranean. The Queen of Sheba's legendary gifts to King Solomon reportedly included precious stones carried along these routes.
### The Indian Ocean Network
Sri Lanka (ancient Taprobane) was a critical hub in Indian Ocean trade. The island's extraordinary gem diversity — sapphires, rubies, spinels, garnets, moonstone, and others — made it a natural entrepot. Roman, Arab, Chinese, and Southeast Asian traders all visited Sri Lanka for gemstones, creating a cosmopolitan trading culture that persisted for millennia.
Roman coins found in Sri Lankan archaeological sites confirm direct trade links. The Romans imported sapphires, rubies, and pearls from Sri Lanka and India, paying with gold coinage and manufactured goods.
## The Silk Road Era (200 BCE-1500 CE)
The Silk Road — the network of overland and maritime routes connecting China to the Mediterranean — was also a gemstone highway. Key gemstone commodities included:
**Nephrite jade**: From Khotan (modern Hetian, Xinjiang) to Chinese workshops. The jade route was one of the oldest segments of the Silk Road, predating silk trade by centuries. Khotan jade was so important to China that military expeditions were launched to secure the trade.
**Lapis lazuli**: Continued from Badakhshan westward to Islamic and European markets.
**Spinels and rubies**: From Badakhshan and Burma, traveling through Central Asian trading posts to Middle Eastern and European courts. Many of the great "rubies" (actually spinels) in European and Asian crown jewels traveled these routes.
**Turquoise**: From Iranian mines (Nishapur) throughout the Islamic world and beyond.
**Amber**: From the Baltic coast southward to the Mediterranean and eastward through Central Asia. Amber was so valued in antiquity that the overland route from the Baltic to the Adriatic was called the "Amber Road."
## The Portuguese Maritime Revolution
Vasco da Gama's arrival in Calicut (India) in 1498 transformed gemstone trade. The Portuguese established direct maritime routes between India, Southeast Asia, and Europe, bypassing the Arab and Venetian intermediaries who had controlled the overland trade for centuries.
Portuguese Goa became a major gemstone trading center. Rubies from Burma, sapphires from Sri Lanka, and later diamonds from India passed through Portuguese hands. The Portuguese also discovered gemstone resources in their Brazilian colony, though significant Brazilian gem production would not begin until the 18th century.
## The Colombian Emerald Flood
Spanish conquest of South America in the 16th century opened a new chapter in gemstone trade. Colombian emeralds, vastly superior to anything available from Egyptian mines, flooded global markets. The Spanish transported emeralds from Colombia to Seville, from where they were traded throughout Europe and, critically, to Mughal India.
The Mughal appetite for Colombian emeralds was voracious. Emeralds crossed the Atlantic, were traded in Lisbon or Seville, crossed the Mediterranean, traversed the Middle East, and arrived at the Mughal court — a journey of over 20,000 kilometers. Today, many of the finest historic Colombian emeralds are in Indian and Iranian collections, far from their South American origin.
## Bangkok: The Modern Gem Capital
In the 20th century, Bangkok emerged as the world's most important gemstone trading center. Several factors drove this concentration:
**Geographic position**: Thailand sits between the major gem sources of Burma, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, and Australia.
**Cutting expertise**: Thai gem cutters developed expertise in colored stone cutting and heat treatment. Bangkok's cutting factories process rough from around the world.
**Heat treatment innovation**: Thai dealers pioneered commercial heat treatment of rubies and sapphires, transforming lower-grade material into marketable gems. This technology (later adopted worldwide) gave Bangkok a processing advantage.
**Trade infrastructure**: The Gemstone and Jewelry Trading Center (Jewelry Trade Center building on Silom Road) houses hundreds of dealers, cutters, and laboratories in a single complex.
Today, Bangkok handles an estimated 80% of the world's colored gemstone trade by volume, though Hong Kong, Jaipur, and Colombo remain important secondary centers.
## Modern Supply Chains
A modern gemstone's journey from mine to consumer might look like this:
1. **Mining**: Ruby rough extracted from Mozambican deposit
2. **Rough trading**: Sold at mine site to local dealer, then to Bangkok rough dealer
3. **Cutting**: Cut and polished in Bangkok or Jaipur cutting factory
4. **Treatment**: Heated in Bangkok facility; documented by laboratory
5. **Wholesale dealing**: Sold through Bangkok gem center to international dealer
6. **Laboratory certification**: Submitted to GIA, Gubelin, or other lab for identification and origin
7. **Auction or retail**: Sold through Christie's Geneva, or through retail jeweler in New York, or online platform
Each step adds value and documentation. The journey from rough crystal to certified, set gemstone can take months to years and involve half a dozen countries.
## Ethical Sourcing and Traceability
Modern consumers increasingly demand supply chain transparency. Initiatives addressing this include:
**Gemfields' mine-to-market tracking**: Gemfields (which operates ruby mines in Mozambique and emerald mines in Zambia) uses auction-based rough sales with documented provenance from mine to buyer.
**Blockchain traceability**: Several companies are developing blockchain-based tracking systems for gemstones, though adoption remains limited.
**The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC)**: Establishes standards for ethical sourcing across the jewelry supply chain.
Full traceability remains elusive for most colored gemstones — the fragmented, multi-country supply chain involves too many informal handoffs to track every stone from mine to market. But the direction of the industry is toward greater transparency, driven by consumer demand and regulatory pressure.
