Calibrated Stone

Calibrated stones are cut to match industry-standard sizes such as 5×7 mm oval, 6 mm round, or 4×6 mm pear, allowing jewelry manufacturers to mass-produce settings and mount stones efficiently. The trade-off is that calibration often requires cutting away more rough to meet exact dimensions, reducing yield and potentially sacrificing optimal color or proportions. Premium quality stones — particularly large rubies, sapphires, and emeralds — are typically not calibrated, as preserving weight and natural character is prioritized over fitting a standard setting.
