About Witherite
Witherite is a barium carbonate mineral forming white to colorless or pale gray dipyramidal crystals with a resinous to vitreous luster in hydrothermal lead ore veins, and is named after English mineralogist William Withering who first described it scientifically in 1784. Classic localities include Fallowfield, England, and Alston Moor in Cumbria, as well as Germany. Witherite is an important industrial source of barium compounds used in the manufacture of glass and other materials.
