About Williamsite

Williamsite is a translucent to transparent oily green variety of antigorite serpentine, resembling fine jade in color and luster, named after Lewis W. Williams who first described it from the chrome ore deposits of Chrome, Pennsylvania, USA. Its rich leek-green to olive-green color with black chromite inclusions and smooth waxy appearance make it an attractive lapidary material carved into cabochons, beads, and figurines. Pennsylvania remains the primary source, though similar material is found in Italy.
