About Strontianite
Strontianite is a strontium carbonate mineral named after the Scottish town of Strontian, near which it was first discovered in 1764, and from which the element strontium takes its name. It typically forms white, gray, yellowish, or pale green acicular to prismatic crystals with a vitreous luster in veins and limestone cavities. Strontianite is an important ore of strontium used in pyrotechnics for red flames, and fine specimens from its type locality are historically significant collector items.
