About Peridot (Olivine)
Peridot is the gem variety of forsteritic olivine (magnesium iron silicate), distinctive for its characteristic lime to olive green color derived from intrinsic iron in the crystal structure—one of few gemstones that occurs in only one color. It is one of the few gems to form in the Earth's mantle (in peridotite xenoliths), delivered to the surface by volcanic activity, and is also found in pallasite meteorites. The finest peridot historically came from Zabargad (St. John's Island) in the Red Sea, with major modern sources in the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona, Pakistan's Kohistan region, and Myanmar.
